Patient self-check-in kiosks cut reception workload by 60% and reduce check-in time from 3 minutes to under 60 seconds. Here is exactly how to deploy one.
Floor-standing kiosks work best for high-volume hospital lobbies. Counter-mounted units suit smaller clinic reception desks. Tablet-based solutions work for pop-up clinics and temporary deployments. MOVO-X kiosks are available in all three configurations.
A complete self-check-in kiosk includes: 21-inch touchscreen (minimum), Android 11+ SoC, NFC reader (MyKad/NRIC), thermal ticket printer (58mm), UPS battery (for power cuts), front camera (optional, for identity capture).
Wired ethernet is strongly preferred over WiFi for clinic kiosks. WiFi interference from other devices can cause intermittent connectivity. Run a Cat5e cable from your clinic router to the kiosk location. If wired is not possible, use a dedicated 5GHz WiFi SSID for the kiosk only.
MOVO-X kiosks ship with pre-installed software. Enter your clinic ID and the kiosk pairs automatically. Configure: clinic logo and branding colours, check-in flow (IC scan → queue selection → ticket print), staff override PIN, and offline mode settings.
Test with 5 staff members acting as patients: (a) new patient registration by phone number, (b) returning patient check-in by IC tap, (c) appointment-based check-in by entering appointment reference, (d) emergency escalation by pressing the red button.
Reception staff need to know: how to reprint a ticket, how to manually call a patient, how to cancel a mistaken check-in, and how to restart the kiosk if the screen freezes. This takes 20 minutes and should be documented in a one-page desk reference.
Laminate a 5-step "How to Check In" instruction card and stick it at the kiosk — this reduces the number of patients who need staff assistance by 80%.
Set the screen timeout to 30 seconds (not the default 5 minutes) to prevent stale sessions blocking the next patient.
Connect the kiosk to a UPS with at least 30 minutes of backup power. Power cuts during a clinic session otherwise create chaos.
Malaysian IC (MyKad via NFC), passport (manual entry or OCR), staff can enter phone number or appointment reference on the patient's behalf. New patients who are not in the system register with a phone number on first visit.
MOVO-X kiosk hardware ranges from RM 3,500 (tablet counter-mount) to RM 8,500 (floor-standing with thermal printer and NFC). Annual software licence and support is separate. Contact us for a tailored quote for your clinic size.
The kiosk displays a "New Patient" flow. The patient enters their name and phone number, which creates a provisional record. Reception staff can complete the demographic details before or after the consultation.
