Full definition
PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and RIS (Radiology Information System) are the two complementary systems that run a radiology department. RIS handles the workflow side — order receipt, scheduling, modality coordination, reporting, billing handoff. PACS handles the image side — DICOM image acquisition from modalities (CT, MR, X-ray, ultrasound), storage (typically in tiered storage with archive after a defined period), retrieval, and viewing on diagnostic workstations.
The two systems integrate tightly — the radiologist reads from PACS while documenting in RIS, with the report flowing back into the EMR/HIS for the referring clinician. Modern enterprise imaging extends PACS beyond radiology to cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, pathology, and other image-intensive specialties.
For a clinic kiosk + queue platform, PACS/RIS integration is via HL7 ORU (results) messages and DICOM image references. MOVO-X integrates with major PACS/RIS vendors (Sectra, Agfa, GE, Philips, Carestream) for clinics that operate imaging departments alongside the kiosk + queue surface.
Where pacs / ris is used
- Hospital radiology departments
- Imaging-only clinics (diagnostic imaging centres)
- Cardiology imaging
- Ophthalmology imaging
- Pathology (digital pathology)
- Dermatology image documentation
Types of pacs / ris
Departmental PACS
Single-department (radiology only).
Enterprise imaging PACS
Cross-specialty image management.
Vendor-Neutral Archive (VNA)
Storage layer separated from viewer; supports multiple PACS frontends.
Cloud PACS
SaaS-delivered PACS — increasingly popular for imaging-only clinics.
Modality worklist
DICOM-MWL — RIS-driven worklist that the modality reads.
Quantified benefits
- ▸Filmless imaging workflow
- ▸Images accessible from any workstation in the network
- ▸Long-term archival meeting regulatory retention
- ▸Cross-specialty image access via enterprise imaging
Frequently asked
Does MOVO-X include PACS?+
No — MOVO-X integrates with PACS/RIS rather than providing them. We connect to existing PACS/RIS via HL7 + DICOM for clinics that operate imaging departments.
What's DICOM?+
Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine — the standard for medical imaging data. DICOM defines image format, transmission protocol, and metadata.
PACS vs VNA?+
PACS bundles storage and viewer. VNA (Vendor-Neutral Archive) separates storage from viewer, allowing multiple frontend viewers across specialties to share storage. Modern enterprise imaging deployments use VNA architecture.
Cloud or on-prem PACS?+
Both viable. On-prem dominant historically; cloud growing fast for new deployments. Hybrid models (cloud archive, on-prem cache) are common for large hospitals.
How does PACS interact with the kiosk?+
Kiosk doesn't interact directly with PACS. The kiosk handles patient registration; that registration flows to the EMR; the radiology order flows to the RIS; the radiologist reads from PACS. Each system handles its part.
