Full definition
Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) is laboratory testing performed at or near the patient rather than sending samples to a central laboratory. Examples: rapid antigen tests (COVID, flu, strep), point-of-care glucose meters, point-of-care HbA1c, blood gas analysers, urine dipsticks, finger-stick lipid panels, rapid HIV tests, point-of-care international normalised ratio (INR) for warfarin monitoring.
The operational benefit: results in minutes enable same-visit clinical decisions. A patient can be tested, diagnosed, and treated in a single visit — vs send-out testing requiring a follow-up visit. Driven adoption in primary care, urgent care, ED, mobile clinics, and home health.
For clinic technology: POCT integration to the EHR matters. Manual transcription of POCT results introduces errors. Modern platforms integrate with POCT devices via vendor APIs or middleware (POCT1-A standard) so results flow directly into the chart.
Where point-of-care testing (poct) is used
- Primary care offices
- Urgent care
- Emergency departments
- Pharmacies (rapid testing)
- Mobile clinics
- Home health
- Pre-anesthetic assessment
- School and workplace clinics
Types of point-of-care testing (poct)
Rapid infectious disease tests
COVID, flu, strep, RSV, HIV.
Point-of-care chemistry
Glucose, HbA1c, lipids, electrolytes.
Point-of-care coagulation
INR for warfarin monitoring.
Urine dipsticks
Quick urinalysis.

ED and ICU rapid analysis.
Quantified benefits
- ▸Same-visit results enable same-visit decisions
- ▸Reduces follow-up visit burden
- ▸Critical in time-sensitive scenarios (sepsis, MI workup)
- ▸Accessibility in resource-constrained settings
Frequently asked
Is POCT regulated?+
Yes. CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) regulates US POCT — most clinical POCT requires waived-test certification at minimum. Modern POCT devices are CLIA-waived.
Does MOVO-X integrate with POCT devices?+
Yes for major POCT vendors via direct integration or POCT1-A middleware. Results flow into the chart automatically.
POCT vs central lab?+
Complementary. POCT for time-critical decisions and screening. Central lab for confirmatory testing, complex panels, and lower-cost batch processing.
AI in POCT interpretation?+
Increasingly — image-based POCT (rapid antigen visual interpretation, urine dipstick) increasingly augmented with computer-vision AI for objective reading.
